Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884), the most important photographer of the Second Empire era, initiated a generation of amateur photographers from a wide range of social backgrounds. With their master’s help, they invented and aesthetic that broke away from the classical teachings of the Beaux-Arts. Foreshadowing the modernist movement of the inter-war years over 70 years before it emerged, these photographers created images that are astonishingly bold and accomplished.
The exhibition begins with a selection of prints by Le Gray and views of his Paris studio. It explores what made the “Le Gray school” so unique, and focuses on shared techniques used by the group. The second part showcases five major photographers, some but not all well known: Nègre, Le Secq, Greene, Delaunay and Tournachon. Featuring 160 prints, most shown here for the first time, the exhibition offers a fresh insight into the early years of photography.
