DAVID MAISEL: THE LAKE PROJECT PHOTOGRAPHS
June 5 - August 1, 2003

Von Lintel Gallery is proud to present THE LAKE PROJECT, an exhibition of large-scale photographs by David Maisel.

For more than two decades, David Maisel has explored American landscapes that have been transformed by severe environmental damage. Captured from an aerial perspective, Maisel's photographs appear as abstracted, yet complex, maps of the abused terrain. Serving as a means to meditate on contemporary consciousness, the surreal images do not incite a clear call for action as much as they inspire private contemplation. They are both spectacular and horrifying. Incorporating equal measures of documentation and metaphor, beauty and despair, Maisel's works reflect a contemporary version of the sublime, and are truly transcendental landscapes.

THE LAKE PROJECT introduces the viewer to Maisel's fascinating depiction of Owens Valley. Located in southeastern California, this now arid stretch of land was once home to Owens Lake and the lower Owens River. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the lake was completely drained in order to divert water to a quickly growing Los Angeles. The result was a vast exposed salt flat with unusually concentrated mineral levels and extremely vulnerable topsoil. In 2002, in an effort to diminish the frequent toxic dust storms that form in the area, the Environmental Protection Agency began to flood parts of the lakebed. Maisel, who has photographed Owens Valley before and after the EPA's stabilization program, succeeds in archiving the geographical transformation while offering an incredibly innovative viewpoint.

David Maisel has exhibited widely in the United States. His photographs are represented in many museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, LACMA, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the George Eastman House. He lives and works in the San Francisco Bay area.

Opening Reception: Thursday, June 5, from 6-8 PM

SPACE I I
JOHN ZINSSER: BIBLE STUDIES
June 5 - August 1, 2003

Von Lintel Gallery is pleased to announce BIBLE STUDIES, a show of new abstract works on paper by John Zinsser.

John Zinsser describes his current project:
What role do painting titles play in forming a bridge between content and meaning and abstract art? This question has long vexed me--as well as inspiring me to publish my mini treatise, 750 Standard Painting Titles, in 1992. I recently began to think about Biblical titles. Starting with Genesis, of course,I realized that the Bible is full of great painting titles. Some examples: "The First Day," "Without Form," "The Face of the Deep," "Dust and Ashes," "One Language, One Speech," "A Pillar of Salt." With their elemental overtones, these seemed directly attached to my painting practice--abstraction in which the material elements are allowed to assert a kind of primary authority. Especially with regard to associative meaning. That is, the reading that is brought to looking at a piece of art by the viewer. To me, a formal painting still represents something. Given the long standing of religious subject matter in painting from an art historical vantage point, the connection into!
the present moment seemed clear--and intriguing.

Zinsser, 42, is a leading member of a group of younger abstract painters responding to the legacy of the American Abstract Expressionist movement through newly objective terms. His works are duochrome, radically reduced to just two interactive colors, oil painted over enamel He has exhibited widely in the U.S. and Europe since 1988. He was co-founder of Journal of Contemporary Art in 1988 and has written for such publications as Art in America. He is currently a lecturer on contemporary art at The New School University in New York.
