A First in Lifetime project for of the Year of Creative Scotland 2012

Abrupt Encounters is a new inclusive arts programme developed by a collective of creatively engaged participants with learning disabilities, evolving first in a lifetime opportunities and live arts events in public spaces in some of central Scotland’s most prominent public places, starting with Stirling Castle and the Tolbooth. This is Artlink Central’s most ambitious project to date and is set to widen interest and access to live art forms, which are typically accessed by no more than 1% of disabled people in Scotland.

The public will begin to get their first opportunity to view this programme at a special preview event at The Changing Rooms in the Tolbooth on Saturday 27th October from 2-4pm.
The first public manifestation of this work will evolve in The Changing Room as the gallery becomes an operative base for exploring public spaces at the top of the town in Stirling.

Investigating space, orientation, architecture, material, people and place, The Changing Room will become a site of meetings, encounters and installations as it becomes inhabited by the participants and the facilitating artists.
Acting as an observatory, the space will continue evolving over the course of the tenancy, documenting the programme, connecting it to other Abrupt Encounters spaces and offering audiences a portal to experiencing and immersing themselves in beautiful moments and places.

Reflecting participatory arts processes, the work/s will be site specific, incorporating amongst other mediums, sound works and projection.
Produced by Artlink Central in collaboration with UZ Arts
Abrupt Encounters is supported by Creative Scotland, NHS Forth Valley, Falkirk Council, Stirling Council and the Gordon Fraser Charitable Trust.
Project partners include: Historic Scotland and Creative Stirling

Supporting artists working on the project are Emma Bowen, Claire Docherty, Sharon Quigley, Jane Pitt, Jenna Watt and Kat Wilson.
“I’m delighted to have this opportunity to work with the ever-inspiring Abrupt Encounters artists. I have found it refreshing to work cross-collaboratively and inter-disciplinary with such an amazing group of individuals who constantly challenge what it means to truly collaborate.” Sharon Quigley

“Artlink Central has worked previously in Callander and it's very exciting to be back, working with a group of very talented, artistic participants. We are working with live artist Jenna Watt and it's been brilliant to introduce a new way of working to the participants and create live art work in the Callander community” Kat Wilson

"We are exploring new ideas of sound and music with Jane Pitt - our ears are unblocked, suddenly we are alive to the sounds of our environment" Claire Docherty

"It's great to have to an opportunity to explore live art with in rural communities. It's an art form that can sometimes be missed out when putting a project together. Our participants are really open to live art and trying new things which is testament to the work that Abrupt Encounters and Artlink Central have been doing in these communities." Jenna Watt
