For the second project of the program Spectacular the museum's collection will be, over the course of a day, dismantled, temporarily removed from its usual location by a professional art handling company, loaded into trucks and reinstalled exactly how it was hung before, after having been taken on a short ride around the museum. This piece directly deals with the most significant part of the museum.

Followed by a conversation between the artists and Jens Hoffmann
Throughout the last century a lot of effort was put into developing a
completely neutral architectural environment for art presentations,
something which is obviously not possible. By just re-organizing the very
materials that these spaces consist of, we question their objectivity.
- Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset
For the second project of the program SPECTACULAR the museum's collection
will be, over the course of a day, dismantled, temporarily removed from
its usual location by a professional art handling company, loaded into
trucks and reinstalled exactly how it was hung before, after having been
taken on a short ride around the museum. This piece directly deals with
the most significant part of the museum, its collection and will not add
or subtract anything. By this temporary displacement of the permanent
collection, Elmgreen & Dragset not only question by simple means the
function and dynamics of the museum but they also make a statement about
the beauty of doing something absolutely "useless".
The works of Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset deal with issues related to
the constitution and deconstruction of power structures within and outside
the art world. In particular the artist duo has focused on the white cube
as an example of a monomanic public architecture. Since the mid-90's the
artists have been among the most important contributors to a new
understanding of the term performance. Their work takes issues such as
interrelation, duration etc. into consideration and human conditions are
discussed not necessarily only through being represented by the body but
more often in site specific sculptural works and interactive
installations.
Michael Elmgreen (born 1961 in Copenhagen) and Ingar Dragset (born 1969 in
Trondheim) recently had solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Zürich and
Portikus, Frankfurt a.M. (2001/2003), Fundacio La Caixa, Barcelona (2002)
and Fondazione Trussardi, Milan (2003). The artist duo has also
participated in numerous group shows such as the São Paulo and the Kwangju
Biennial (2002); the Istanbul Biennial (2001), Manifesta 3, Lublijana
(2000) and they are taking part in this year's Venice Biennial. In 2002
they won the German art prize "Preis der Nationalgalerie für Junge Kunst"
at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin.
The project of Elmgreen & Dragset is supported by International Art Movers
