A DECADE OF CANADIAN ANIMATION: Opens Friday, July 4
Did you enjoy our Oscar-Nominated Shorts earlier this year, or the late and
lamented Spike and Mike programs?
Canada's nationally-funded animation program is world-class, attracting the best
animators from around the world.
Bob's Birthday - Dir. Alison Snowden & David Fine
Reeling from birthday vertigo, a frustrated dentist searches for meaning in his
life.
The Boy Who Saw the Iceberg - Dir. Paul Driessen
A bored young boy daydreams about a dangerous life of adventure, but soon finds
himself facing a real life drama.
Frank the Wrabbit - Dir. John Weldon
A highly intelligent 'wrabbit' with a philosophical world view that brings him
great comfort finds his outlook is challenged when his food source disappears.
How Dinosaurs Learned to Fly - Dir. Munro Ferguson
The dinosaurs were headed for trouble. They ate nothing but junk food, they
partied all night, they never brushed their teeth. The early mammals warned
them, 'You'll be extinct if you keep that up!' But the dinosaurs just laughed...
I'm Your Man - Dir. Roslyn Schwartz
Set to Leonard Cohen's song 'I'm Your Man,' this short offers a playful
meditation on romance and the clichés that go with it.
La Salla - Dir. Richard Condie
A classic tale of temptation unfolds in this animated comic opera as our
protagonist succumbs to temptation, opening the door to his destiny.
My Grandmother Ironed the King's Shirts - Dir. Torill Kove
Treating history as a fabric woven from personal stories, animator Torill Kove
follows a thread of family history, embroidering it with playful twists along
the way.
Village of Idiots - Dir. Eugene Fedorenko & Rose Newlove
Based on a Jewish folk tale adapted by John Lazarus, this is the story of
Shmendrik's new life and its uncanny closeness to his old life; offering an
extremely funny take on our tendency to romanticize what we don't have.
When the Day Breaks - Dir. Wendy Tilby & Amanda Forbis
Ruby the pig's life takes an unexpected turn after she witnesses the accidental
death of a stranger.

RUSSIAN ARK: Returns Friday-Sunday, July 4-6 for a limited engagement!
"One of the most astonishing films ever made." - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"Unprecedented virtuosity."- Richard Corliss, TIME
"A visual astonishment." - Kenneth Turan, LA Times
"An astonishing tour de force of filmmaking magic." - Stephen Hunter, Washington
Post
Shot entirely in one continuous take, director Aleksandr Sokurov's RUSSIAN ARK
blew away Real Art Ways' audiences earlier this spring. We could only have the
film then for two weeks...but now it's back for a special weekend engagement in
its 35mm glory. Sokurov covers 300 years of Russian history by winding his way
through the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg...with the help of thousands of
extras and four live orchestras. In Russian and French with English subtitles.
(Russia, 2002, 98 min)

I AM TARANEH: Held over
Another week for audience favorite I AM TARANEH...
Fifteen-year-old Taraneh, whose widowed father is in jail, refuses the unwanted
attentions of carpet salesman Amir - until Amir's mother talks Taraneh into
accepting Amir's marriage proposal. Within four months the couple realize that
they are incompatible, they divorce and Amir emigrates back to Germany. When
Taraneh discovers she is pregnant she decides against all advice and intense
social pressure, to keep the baby.
The strength of director Rasul Sadr-Ameli's (The Girl In the Sneakers) film is
its the essential humanity of its heroine and its peak inside the subtle but
important political and social changes being made inside Iranian culture. In
Farsi with English subtitles. (Iran, 2001, 110 min) CONNECTICUT PREMIERE.

HYBRID: Meet the director Thursday July 10, 7:40
"It's David Lynch goes to Iowa." -Seattle Weekly
Meet filmmaker Monteith McCollum at the Connecticut Premiere of HYBRID,
Thursday, July 10 at 7:40.
The winner of the grand prize at 2002 Slamdance and featured in Lincoln Center's
New Directors/New Films series, HYBRID is like a fever dream that's both
discursive and digressive; it takes us inside the director's head, incorporating
time-lapse photography, interviews and found film on Milford Beeghly's life and
achievements in the world of corn hybridizing. Yes, an exciting and cutting edge
film on corn hybridizing and the field's colossus, a reedy voiced man obsessed
with a grand passion for corn. Beeghly was McCollum's grandfather and it's plain
to see what drew him to this nearly vaudevillian personality. (US, 2002, 92 min)
McCollum will answer questions and talk with the audience after the film has
screened.
__________
Guy Maddin's DRACULA: Opens Friday, July 11
"It's sexy, brainy and slightly nuts." - Manohla Dargis, LA Times
Maddin's delirious DRACULA: PAGES FROM A VIRGIN'S DIARY is a silent rendering of
the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Bram Stoker adaptation in black and white...and red.
Playing with Maddin's now-legendary 2000 short THE HEART OF THE WORLD, a
Metropolis-like barrage of special effects. (Canada, 2001, 75 min)
