Way will present a series of her characteristically intricate and lyrical abstract pen and ink drawings. Way believes that all of life is pattern, and in her brilliantly rendered compositions, she uses repeating geometric systems as a starting point to explore these forms. Through her intuitive layering of structured forms, nuanced color, and playful abstractions, Way creates richly detailed, textural works. Ranging in size from seven to eighteen inches in height, the resulting works have an organic and dynamic quality in their linear patterns and rhythms. Although small in scale, Way renders these multifaceted drawings with intricacy and precision, giving them a depth and a strength which far surpass their physical dimensions.
Andrea Way was born in San Francisco, CA in 1949 and received her BA from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN in 1971. Her work has been featured in many gallery and museum exhibitions and is included in the public collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC; and the National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC, among others. She currently divides her time between Washington, DC and the San Francisco Bay area.
The exhibition continues through August 22, 2003.
