Paolo Erbetta Gallery è lieta di presentare nella nuova sede di Berlino la prima personale in Germania del pittore Pietro Capogrosso; artista tra i più attenti della sua generazione, è stato già protagonista di due mostre personali presso la precedente sede della galleria in Italia. Ha partecipato a importanti collettive in Italia, all’estero e alla 54. Biennale di Venezia.

Nell’occasione sarà presentata una nuova serie di lavori dal titolo “Schnee - Sehnsucht”, di piccole e medie dimensioni. Il tema è velocemente riassunto in quattro parole: Russia, neve, spaesamento, Sehnsucht.

Da attento osservatore, Capogrosso intraprende lunghe passeggiate tra i boschi di betulle, dove non solo isola scorci di paesaggio, ma anche figure che si muovono e si immergono in questo paesaggio poco definito e quasi rarefatto. Perché è questo che fa la neve quando cade: confonde le forme, nasconde i colori e lascia libero spazio agli occhi e all’anima di chi quel paesaggio guarda. Capogrosso ne dipinge l’essenza paesaggistica e spirituale, scopre la neve come condizione fisica e mentale; essa si presenta, allo stesso tempo, quasi come una sublimazione astratta dello stesso.

Attraverso una pittura mono e bi-cromatica ottiene un colore assoluto, riporta l’astrazione che la neve opera sul paesaggio e vi riversa una condizione mentale di spaesamento e di Sehnsucht, di senso di infinito, verso una ricerca che si perde in questo colore assoluto e in questo paesaggio che non c’è, ma esiste.

In questa nuova serie di opere fa la sua entrata un nuovo elemento, ovvero la presenza di omini colorati, i quali si pongono in contrasto con i tenui colori del paesaggio. In questi lavori il paesaggio non è più il protagonista, ma diventa esso stesso sfondo ancora più astratto e indefinito. Alcune volte gli omini sono impegnati in attività, altre volte sono a riposo, rivolti al paesaggio e con le spalle all’osservatore, come su un palcoscenico, in un’attesa mista a contemplazione, ricordandoci, formalmente, il “Viandante sul mare di nebbia” di Caspar D. Friedrich.

The Paolo Erbetta Gallery proudly presents painter Pietro Capogrosso’s first German solo exhibition in its new venue in Berlin. Pietro Capogrosso is among the most astute artists of his generation and has already been the focus of two solo exhibitions at the Gallery in Italy. He has participated in important group exhibitions both in Italy and abroad, as well as in the 54th Venice Biennale.

On this occasion, a new series of small and medium sized works will be presented under the title “Schnee - Sehnsucht” (“snow – longing”). This theme is easily summarized in four words: Russia, snow, disorientation, longing.

Capogrosso is a careful observer who likes to take long walks in birch woods; it is here that he catches glimpses of both the landscape and the forms which move and inhabit this undefined and almost indistinct space. And this is exactly what happens when snow falls - it transforms and redefines shapes, mutes colours and invites the senses to observe the landscape freely. Capogrosso portrays the essential and spiritual aspects of the landscape and considers snow to be both a mental and physical condition - one which at the same time appears to abstract and alter the landscape.

Through a monochromatic and bichromatic painting, the artist obtains the perfect colour to represent the level of abstraction that snow imposes on the landscape. Capogrosso expresses both the mental disorientation and the longing – a metaphor for the infinite – in his landscapes. This combination of disorientation and longing epitomizes his search through abstract colours and landscapes which although are not there, nevertheless exist.

A new element surfaces in this new series of artwork - colourful forms or omini (literally “little men”) contrast with the subtle colours of the landscape. In these works, the landscape is no longer the central focus; rather it provides an even more abstract and undefined background. Sometimes the omini are involved in activities, sometimes they are resting with their backs turned to us, observing the landscape. It is as if they are standing on a stage, waiting, contemplating, and recalling Caspar D. Friedrich’s “The wanderer above the sea of fog”.
