For our part in ArtHouston 2003, the Matthew Travis Gallery is pleased to introduce to Houston the work of New York–based artists Cecile Brunswick, Dik Liu, Michael Gardner, and Brendan Murphy. Each artist celebrates the art of painting in a distinct way. Brunswick’s brilliantly colored landscapes contrast with Liu’s finely honed still lifes. Gardner and Murphy combine the traditional with the unexpected in their exploration of life.
Cecile Brunwick’s oil paintings reflect the influence of recent sojourns in North Africa. Rhythmic Berber music, the sounds of the Arabic language, colorful details and ornamentations embedded in the architecture, fabric, rugs and woodwork help determine the colors, lines and shapes she chooses. Like Berber rugs into which women weave their histories, her paintings reflect her emotional reactions to an enigmatically beautiful, engaging land.
Dik Liu’s still lifes depict the sensation of seeing different colors and textures: flowers, fruits, glass, and metal. He depicts the sensation of seeing these objects as they fire their light rays, pumping the hues to a technicolor intensity, so they match the saturated light he sees in the objects. He condenses these objects to a tactile surface with a few palette knife strokes, bridging realism into an expressive space.
Michael Gardner’s sensual works on paper explore the space between objects. As he puts it, “I think there are two sides to everything. . . and it’s the ripping apart. . . division. . . separation of the two that’s interesting to me. But what is in between the two sides? What
is the ‘space’ in between? What is happening between the objects? Object to object?†His most unusual works weave together two watercolors to become an original, arresting statement.
Brendan Murphy’s work is infused with a dramatic intensity that threatens to jump off the canvas or paper. He discovered his knack for combining color and style when he redesigned a three-story apartment in Rosenheim, Germany, introducing unexpected color combinations and designs to give each room its own identity and aura. He takes great joy in knowing that he can make other people feel better with his creativity.
