comunicato stampa

Esther Schipper is pleased to present the fourth solo exhibition of the artist duo Grönlund-Nisunen.

The work of the two Scandinavian artists deals with the visualisation of physical phenomena in sculptural form. Occurrences like glowing, vibrations or the delicate balance between magnetic attraction and repelling are often central to their work. Their site-specific installations readily deal with invisible phenomena, such as electrical currents or radiation, and make them visibile. They are shown in a technically precise yet aesthetically convincing fashion.

At Esther Schipper a 4-metre tall cube Spring Field, 2013 will be shown, installed site specifically in relation to the size of the exhibition space. The work consists of vertically arranged constantly vibrating metal springs. In the second space a selection of architectural drawings, abstract photographs alongside the large-scale installation Mirror Image, 2013 will be on view. Mirror Image is made up of countless steel wires fixed and paired with magnets between the ceiling and floor of the gallery. On the floor, Wave of Matter, 2013, a 150cm square steel plate with hundreds of small steel balls set in motion by the rocking of the plate will lend a wave-like audio backdrop to the show.

Tommi Grönlund (b.1967) and Petteri Nisunen (b. 1962) have been working together for 20 years. They have exhibited internationally in Moderna Museet, Stockholm (The 1st, 2004) and Kiasma, Helsinki (Frequented Etherics, Spherics and Bars, 1998). Their participation in group shows include: The 7th Wave, Kunsthalle Helsinki, Helsinki; Cage 100 – Opening Spaces for Action, Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig, Leipzig and Freq_Out, Moderna Museet, Stockholm (all 2012) as well as The Morning Line, T-B A21, Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Vienna (2011) and Berlin North at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2004). Large-scale commissioned works are viewable at: Arabianranta housing project, Helsinki (2012); Kv Lusten, Hornbergs Strand housing project, Stockholm (2011); Nye Ahus Hospital, Akershus, Oslo (2008) and Bergen University, Bergen (2007). Grönlund-Nisunen live and work in Helsinki, Finland.
