The exhibition ‘Face-off’ presents a selection of works which deal with the multifaceted face of Rotterdam. Curator Teodora Kotseva invites both artists and filmmakers who offer glimpses to our contemporaneity, moments of tranquility, happiness, and loneliness. The focus falls on the identity of the self. New photo and video work, relevant and attributive to the moment, are specifically made and produced for the show.
In the past five years the Authentic Boys have been exploring the interconnections between film, visual arts and theatre. In Rehearsing Revolution they invited secondary school students to experiment with their ‘revolutionary potential ‘ and rebel against personal habits and limits. Each participating student was asked to create personal revolutionary mask. The end result was a customized self-portrait –instant moment captured on a frame.
Filmmaker Jan de Bruin participates with a series from his documentary project called ‘Dandy Rotterdam ‘ made in collaboration with Ans Kanen and Marieke Wijnen. In course of several months Jan has been filming different characters, each bringing a hint towards his/her personal world. They all live in Rotterdam and thus reveal something about their relationship with the city. ‘Dandy Rotterdam’ is portraiture of our city and its dwellers.
Photographer Otto Snoek shows works from the on-going project WHY NOT, which captures the vibrant and vivid character of his native Rotterdam. For over fifteen years the artist has been documenting frames from our daily life- festivals, soccer games, market days etc. When sitting in front of these works we are confronted with realities, which seem unreal and staged. Nevertheless, they are what we often do not have time to see-moments of collective craziness, loneliness or happiness.
‘Humans of Rotterdam’, seen and portrayed by eighteen-year old student Naomi van Heck is the Dutch version of HONY or ‘Humans of New York’ initiated in 2010 by Brandon Stanton. Both Naomi and Brandon are non-professional photographers. It is the passion about the medium and the desire to capture the varied identity of the city inhabitants that brought them to this project. Naomi admits that everybody hides something special- a story to tell, it this aspect of her work that makes her way to the street. ‘Face-off’ will be the first occasion for Naomi to show her work to the public and provide an opportunity for us to recognize the known and unknown street heroes from her photos.
Lenny Oosterwijk’s work has a recognizable social documentary style. His raw, intimate and straightforward portraits of artists, actors, politicians and writers are featured in Vrij Nederland, MAN, Rails, BLVD and the UIT Agenda magazines. He works as a creative director for exhibitions and media companies. As a photographer he has travelled the globe. Since 2010 he has been questioning the surreal landscape, making pictures of ‘nature in making’ on the island Tiengemeten. His work follows the seasons on an on-going quest.
Mick van de Miel is a young Dutch photographer who is ultimately interested in the human portraiture. He is a student at Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. For his work he admits: “Having rather hermit-like tendencies photography has forced me to be a more social person since my subject of choice tends to be people…I’m not entirely sure what attracts me so much to photography, but it’s at least nice to have a tool to help you frame, categorize, forget and reflect on what’s happening around you “.
