One-night event hosted by Ghariokwu Lemi
This Saturday night, it's Africa Hot in Greenpoint. Martinez Gallery is proud to present Jump N Funk, a night of art and music, highlighted by a talk by legendary album cover artist Ghariokwu Lemi and a sale of 20 original albums he designed. The evening is curated by Antonio Zaya, with music courtesy of Jump n Funk.
Lemi is a Nigerian who painted nearly all the album covers for fellow countryman Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Kuti, who died in 1997, was a pioneer and revolutionary in the 1970s Afrobeat movement, sourcing soul and funk music to create a radical political music that made him a legend in his homeland and today recalls a time of utopian hopes and dreams fueled by conscience and dissidence.
For his part, Ghariokwu Lemi painted album covers that were equally courageous and evocative as the music on the vinyl they contained. Bright and combative, his work paid tribute to the great bandleader while at the same time bringing forth the violent themes that so strongly resonated throughout revolutionary Africa at the time.
At 9:00 PM Lemi will give a lecture and answer questions about his work, about Kuti, contemporary Nigeria, and about the Afrobeat movement.
And as a special treat, 20 original Kuti albums, with Lemi's cover designs, all printed and pressed in Nigeria, will be on display and up for sale during the evening. The albums come from Lemi's private collection and all proceeds from the sale will go to the artist's children's educations.
And once we hear from Lemi, everyone is invited to hit the dance floor, where DJ Rich Medina will turn up the heat even more with his magic, direct from his booth to your booty until you can't take it any more.
Doors open at: 8.00pm
