From Holland With Love

Love is the theme of the exhibition entitled From Holland With Love, which will be on display in the Netherlands Museum Of Photography from 9 March to 20 May 2013. The exhibition is structured around the photos of Ed van der Elsken and contains a selection of photos, video installations and films that reflect aspects of his oeuvre in a present-day manner.

Love, friendship, intimacy, romance, eroticism and lust stimulate the spectator in a very personal and occasionally amusing way. The work of Van der Elsken forms the starting point of a contemporary selection of Dutch image-makers: Koos Breukel, Heddy Honigmann, Paul Kooiker, A.P. Komen & Karen Murphy, Bertien van Manen, Julika Rudelius, Martine Stig, Andrea Stultiens and the Useful Photography collective.

On the basis of a universal theme, the Museum offers a refreshing perspective of the diverse working methods and interests of ten exceptional photographers. Each contribution represents a way of working or a vision of photography, in addition to a specific substantiation of the theme of ‘love’.

It is self-evident that the photographer and photography itself also play an important role in this framework: the photo of the loved one as a cherished object or object of desire, the photo as a memorandum, the image as a surrogate for unattainable love, the wedding picture as the ultimate endorsement of love, the interplay of truth and fiction, voyeurism and, of course, love of the image. This being the case, From Holland with Love is not only a reflection upon love but also upon the medium of photography.

This exhibition particularly features two photographers championed by the Netherlands Museum of Photography: Koos Breukel and Ed van der Elsken. Van der Elsken’s work was the point of departure for the compilation of the exhibition. He nurtured a special preference for photographing attractive and extraordinary people. He produced photographic series of streets in every corner of the world, and was inspired by the humane side of existence.

His first publication was the renowned book entitled Een liefdesgeschiedenis in Saint-Germain-des-Prés (A Love Story in Saint-Germain-des-Prés), published in 1956. This photo book is not only of major significance within post-war Dutch photography, but also occupies an important position within the collection of the Netherlands Museum of Photography due to its theme and trail-blazing designs.

In 2010, with support from the Mondriaan Fund, the Netherlands Museum of Photography purchased an important series that Koos Breukel had made of his photographer friend Eric Hamelink, who died in 1995.

This exhibition harmonizes with the aim of the Museum to devote attention to photography in the Netherlands. In this context, documentary photography assumes pride of place, although other forms of photography are also covered, as well as the lateral connections to video en film. From Holland With Love was produced at the request of the 8th edition of the International Biennial of Photography and the Visual Arts in Liège (BIP2012), where it was on display in the spring of 2012.

Museum Shop

During the exhibition period, the assortment in the Museum Shop pays particular attention to the theme of love. The Gallery of the Museum offers high-quality barite prints from the rich collection of the Museum. Photographers who are represented in the exhibition, such as Koos Breukel for example, will also be invited to produce an edition.
