HH-Streetwork
The audio tracks were recorded in Hamburg during August 2001. The
recording is a transposition of the light in the city. The tones you
hear were produced by an electronic sound generator that was installed
in a car. The sound generator transposed the lights,
as measured by 6 sensors, into high and low pitched square waves. The
sensors where attached to the windows of the car. The pitch and
intensity of the sound changed in 'real time' to the light according to
the traffic situation. I drove through Hamburg on various times, during
the day and at night. I followed different routes while recording the
light, whether sun light or artificial light.
You hear a mix of high and low pitched square waves recorded in
different light areas of Hamburg. You can hear the sun at noon
on the Köhlbrandbrücke and the full moon at night. The electronic sound
blends with simultaneous recorded ambient sounds.
For the sound installation/performance two loudspeakers are positioned
in such a way as to fill the entire space with sound. I processed the CD
version according to stereo surround parameters allowing spatialisation
in all possible directions.
Maria Blondeel (°1963 Halle) is an intermedia artist based in Ghent,
Belgium. Her work can be characterized as a multidisciplinary,
experimental approach to technology, light and sound. Her concepts are
intrinsically connected with the time-course. She has devised a system
that translates light into sound. Photo-electric resistors are linked to
sound generators producing square waves.
The generated pitch rises with the intensity of the light falling on a
sensor. Fading light causes the pitch to drop, down to a point where
pitch changes into clicks. Her work is an artistic research about light
in urban and rural area's, the real daylight situation
and its time bound process subjected to meteorology and the changes
between day and night. She creates something unfinished,
its light input casting a lot of sound into our world. Sound becomes an
important part of the image. The lights she uses are everywhere. The
pictorial qualities of image and sound blurs the border between hearing
and seeing. Maria Blondeel made works
for computer controlled slide projectors, interactive installations,
site specific interventions, CD's, video's, concerts and performances in
collaboration with musicians, web projects and works with radio waves
and alternative energy.
