comunicato stampa

On Saturday September 6, 2003 Santa Monica's Lowe Gallery presents new works by selected gallery artists including Andrew Saftel, Donald Sultan, William Morris, and Dusty Griffith. This exhibition runs through September 27, 2003.

Andrew Saftel's works are as much artifacts as paintings. Comprised of carved, etched, scored and painted wood - with inlays of ceramic or metal - these tableaux are chronicles that act as metaphorical maps of memory. Saftel's paintings become atmospheres of thought, filled with words, images and stories. Like a life lived, these paintings are layers of information - partly obscured, partly revealed.

Donald Sultan is internationally known for a varied and extensive body of work, which includes painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. His bold, colorful and graphic paintings are made of plaster and oil over linoleum tile on board. These exuberant images define why Sultan is credited with reinventing and reinvigorating the classical still life.

William Morris is among the world's most celebrated glass sculptors. Since the late 1970's, William Morris has increasingly delved into mythological expressions of man's behavior and role in contemporary society. Of special interest to the artist has been our connectedness to a long and complex cultural evolution, which has been impossible for us to grasp save for a dim historic memory.

Dusty Griffith's colorful and lush encaustic paintings are symbolic of time, events, stories and emotions. All of the symbols and sketches that are layered into the different wax, Plexiglas or tracing paper surfaces causes the image or symbols to become "a part of" the whole picture not just a "piece of it".
