Inspiration for his creative works of art is attributed to the realities of
life, humor and irony for artist Doug Murphy. With a unique style he calls
'graphic pop illustration' Murphy's whimsical yet clever humor can be seen
in his paintings, characters and 3 dimensional works at an upcoming solo
show at Gallery 825, LAAA (Los Angeles Art Association) 825 La Cienega, Los
Angeles on September 6th from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
The Gallery 825/LAAA showing of Murphy's work heads the list of a collection
of gallery shows, in which he was a featured or solo artist, including
Brewery ArtWalk, Black Market, Cannibal Flower, Art Bar, Mad River Post, and
Gallery 825's California Open Show. Several trendy Melrose Avenue boutique
shops have and currently feature his work, as well as sell T-shirts and
buttons with Murphy's designs. His art was also shown in Jointz magazine,
and he created the cover of the March 2003 issue of BPM magazine, being
interviewed for a story included in the issue as well.
On display for the September 6th show will be eight mixed media and acrylic
3 Ft. by 4 Ft. paintings, fashioned after his favorite childhood Lego®
toys. Perfect examples of his humor and irony, the toy like figures are
depicted interacting in ways never seen on commercial TV. Appreciating the
whimsical muse of Murphy's art, actor Seth Green of the popular Austin
Powers movies, has added one of Murphy's pieces to his private collection.
In addition, attendees will be able to see the characters of over 130
musical artists. Each 4' x 4' print skillfully captures the recognizable
features of the well-known vocalists. The collection entitled HEADS is an
ever-expanding series as art lovers request their favorite musical artists
done in Murphy's style. From Adam Ant, Sting, Kiss, the Beatles to
Beethoven, Run DMC and Cher, HEADS are another example of Murphy's art and
talent.
A graduate of Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, Murphy incorporated
his graphic design and packaging background with his love of the acrylic
media to create his unique paintings and 3 dimensional art pieces. Plastic
molded robots and an eye catching 'golden Buddha', comprise the remainder of
works featured in the September 6th showing.
HEADS may be purchased at the show as well as making special requests for
individual artists not currently shown. A preview of some of Murphy's work
can be viewed at <http://www.plasticfucker.com>.
