Whitney Museum of American Art
At Whitney Museum first screening of a film by Brigitte Cornand about Louise Bourgeois, "C'est le murmure de l'eau qui chante" (The Whisper of Whistling Water)
Brigitte Cornand's "C'est le murmure de l'eau qui chante" is an intimate documentary portrait of the world-renowned artist Louise Bourgeois. Using eight years of footage in a poetic collage, the film depicts Bourgeois' artistic process, creative environment, and New York home. Cornand's interviews with a hand-held camera illuminate Bourgeois' childhood memories as the continuous
inspiration and material of her work.
The screening takes place in conjunction with the exhibition "Louise Bourgeois: The Insomnia Drawings," curated by Lawrence Rinder, the Whitney's Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator of Contemporary Art. A single work of 220 red, blue, and white drawings made during eight months of sleep-deprived nights, "The Insomnia Drawings" treat themes often addressed in Bourgeois' varied work: childhood memories, water, plants, figures, buildings and the patterns these images inspire. "Louise Bourgeois: The Insomnia Drawings" is on view at the Whitney until September 21.
Before the screening Chrissie Iles, the Whitney's curator of film and video, will introduce Brigitte Cornand and the film. The film was Iles' pick for Artforum's Top Ten Films for 2002.
Admission is free; seating is very limited and avaliable on a first-come, first-served basis.
