Reservoir. The exhibition focuses on sixteen works that use Pyramid Lake - a man-made reservoir located at the intersection of the Angeles and Los Padres National Forests, just off Interstate 5, in California - as the point of departure.
The Freedman Gallery at Albright College is pleased to present Reservoir James Hyde, a solo exhibition of recent work by Brooklyn-based artist James Hyde. The exhibition will be on view in both the Main Gallery and Project Space from March 21 to April 14, 2013 and is curated by Erin Riley-Lopez, Curator of the Freedman Gallery.
The exhibition focuses on sixteen works that use Pyramid Lake—a man-made reservoir located at the intersection of the Angeles and Los Padres National Forests, just off Interstate 5, in California—as the point of departure. Over the last several years, Hyde has taken two trips to Los Angeles to photograph this area, analyzing it through a lens at various angles and from different vantage points, but always returning to the same location. Back in his Brooklyn studio, Hyde transfers and stretches these archival inkjet prints onto linen over which he applies acrylic paint. These works are about distance—time-based, separated in the Gallery space, the location between the east and west coasts, as well as the conversation between how far apart or close together the mediums of painting and photography really are.
A full-color, comprehensive catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
About the Artist
James Hyde was born in Philadelphia in 1958, moved to New York City in 1977 and continues to live and work in Brooklyn. His work ranges from paintings on photographic prints to large-scale installations, photography and abstract furniture design.
Notable solo shows over the last decade include Inhere at Shau Ort in Zürich in 2011; The Stuart Davis Group at the Boiler at Pierogi's Boiler Room in Brooklyn, New York; Live Principles of Ventilation and Adhesion at Villa du Parc, Annemasse, France in 2010; Reformation at Satellite FDC, Brussels in 2009; Survey at Maison de la Culture in Bourges, France in 2008; Painting Then For Now in collaboration with Svetlana Alpers and Barney Kulok at David Krut Projects in New York in 2007; James Hyde, Luminous Platforms and Relaxed Seating at the San Diego Museum of Art, California, in 2006; In The Future We Will Know More at Reynolds Gallery, Richmond, Virginia, and shows at Brent Sikkema Gallery, New York, and Elisabeth Kaufman, Zürich in 2005; Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, North Carolina, and Galerie Filles Du Calvaire, Paris in 2004; Contemporary Art Center Cac Parc Saint-Leger, Pougues les Eaux, France in 2003; Galerie Fernand Leger/Credac, Ivry- sur-Seine, France, The Box Associati, Torino, Italy, Rosenwald-Wolfe Gallery and Basekamp, in Philadelphia in 2002.
Hyde is the recipient of numerous grants including a Pollock-Krasner Grant this year, a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 2008, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship in 2000 and a New York State CAPS Grant in 1982.
He has lectured as a visiting professor at Yale University, Brooklyn College, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Bard College and Cooper Union. He is represented by Galerie Filles Du Calvaire in Paris, Shau Ort in Zürich, David Risley in Copenhagen, Bev Reynolds Gallery in Richmond, Virginia, and by Horton Gallery in New York.
