Images and ideas dealing with contemporary society by almost a dozen international artists. These works will mirror, comment or reflect on structures, organisations or systems of human community. Such observations of social life can also be the starting point for a more open engagement which can extend into the realm of the symbolic, or even the utopian.
The exhibition Images of Society will present images and ideas dealing
with contemporary society by almost a dozen international artists. These
works will mirror, comment or reflect on structures, organisations or
systems of human community. Such observations of social life can also be
the starting point for a more open engagement which can extend into the
realm of the symbolic, or even the utopian.
Images of Society is only confined thematically to a degree, as the aim is
not to treat a clearly defined field. Instead of laying down a thematic
framework, the exhibition indicates a direction. The concrete topics dealt
with by the artists within this large construct of contemporary society
are many and varied. Some of the important current social, political and
cultural themes are touched on, though without the works aspiring to be
conclusive. The simulation and media society, migration or the impact of
military conflicts, interaction between the private and the public, the
risk society and issues related to the interpersonal and the intimate are
addressed and can be related one to the other.
The exhibition will bring together artists of different generations and
from different cultural and social backgrounds. Often the point of
departure for a work of art is something personal, biographical. In
addition, the social realities, and even more so the experiences of the
individual, are more pluralistic today than ever before. The questions
touched on always point beyond the narrow personal reality of the artists.
At a point in time when art and artists are often regarded as being
self-centred, preoccupied with their own environment, their own scene,
when issues to do with art and the art system are highly topical, works
will be shown here in Thun which are striving to come to terms with the
everyday real lifeworld.
