SELECTED PAINTINGS 2002-2003
Well-known San Francisco painter, Donald Feasél, opens an exhibition of
recent abstract paintings at One Post Street on September 8, as part of a
series of exhibitions presented by Brian Gross Fine Art in the lobby gallery
at Crocker Plaza. This exhibition features Feasél's radically new body of
large abstract paintings.
Feasél's recent work is marked by a radical change in technique. Leaving
the brush in favor of poured paint, Feasél allows gravity control over
folded and propped up canvases. The resulting paintings, reminiscent of
abstracted shapes from nature, burst across the surfaces in dramatic,
organic, spontaneous gestures. Ranging in size from four feet square to ten
feet by six feet, the paintings are rich in dynamic color and contrast and
display a delicate balance between the negative space of the unprimed canvas
and the accumulation and dispersion of thinly applied paint in deep browns
and blacks with tonal accents of green, yellow, blue, and purple. The
smooth translucent and vaporous tendrils of Feeder balance in the upper area
of the canvas while in Nebro, a strong diagonal slices across the canvas and
Altarus yields nebulous forms which rise across the canvas in a wash of
smoky combustion.
Donald Feasél is an accomplished Bay Area painter whose abstract oil
paintings have generated critical acclaim over the last ten years. He
received his BA from UCLA in 1976 and studied with Elmer Bischoff at the
University of California at Berkeley where he received his MFA in 1984. His
work has been included in numerous Bay Area exhibitions. This is his fourth
solo exhibition with Brian Gross Fine Art.
Crocker Plaza exhibitions curated by Brian Gross Fine Art have included
solo shows by Patrick Wilson, Gary Lang, Ed Moses, Sono Osato, Peter
Alexander, and Charles Linder.
Crocker Plaza is located at the intersection of Post, Market, and
Montgomery Streets next to the Montgomery BART Station. Lobby hours are:
