Energy Regulation

Sandra Gering Gallery, New York

An exhibition of collaborative drawings by Christian Schumann and Gary Panter. The title Energy Regulation was chosen by the artists (pre-collaboration) in anticipation of having to adjust their output to accommodate the collaborative process. Now, with the results of the collaboration as evidence, Energy Regulation seems a funny title for an exhibition of drawings that seem completely un-regulated.

comunicato stampa

Christian SCHUMANN / Gary PANTER

Sandra Gering Gallery is pleased to present Energy Regulation, an exhibition of collaborative drawings by Christian Schumann and Gary Panter.

A frenetic energy emanates from the allover compositions that fill the pages. Psychedelic imagery spills across the field, in a fluid blending of Schumann and Panter's distinctive styles. The artists refer to the process as being an intuitive conversation; and like a good conversation, the drawings contain recurrent themes, obscure references, tangents, and an interplay of ideas.

Christian Schumann had his first solo exhibition in 1992, and since that time he has exhibited widely both in the US and in Europe. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Dallas Museum of Art, among numerous other venues. He lives and works in Brooklyn.

Gary Panter, the "King of Punk Art", is an illustrator, painter, designer, and part-time musician. As a designer, he received the prestigious Daimler Chrysler Design award in 2000, and received two Emmy awards as head set designer of the television show Pee Wee's Playhouse. As a painter, he has had solo exhibitions around the world, including an exhibition at Le Magasin, in Grenoble, France. As an illustrator, Panter made famous his underground punk style through extended comic novels, numerous album covers, and illustrations for magazines such as The New Yorker and Rolling Stone. His animation series Pink Donkey and the Fly can be seen online at the Cartoon Network website. Panter lives and works in Brooklyn.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10am-6pm. For further information contact Marianna Baer at 646.336.7183.
