"Earth, Water,Sky" is the theme of the September-October exhibition by
artists Mervyn Seldon and Caren Sweeney at 57 Underground Gallery in Pomona.
Both artists are Southern California residents, hold M.F.A. degrees from
California State University, Fullerton, and have shown widely in the region.
The exhibition opens September 11 and closes November 1.
Mervyn Seldon's new work explores the borderline area linking landscape and
still life. Intrigued by the implicit but invisible human presence in both
art forms, she seeks to recreate shared experiences of special places
through light, color, shape, and texture. She is particularly drawn to the
beauty of small things often overlooked in their environment--rocks, leaves,
weeds, and shells--and has incorporated sand, seaweed, leaves, feathers, and
eggshells in some of her still lifes.
Caren Sweeney's new landscapes seek to evoke specific emotional or
psychological states through imagery inspired by memories of places she has
visited and loved. Her fragmentation of the landscape is an intentional
break from the traditional format and reflects how landscape is often seen
in small glimpses at isolated moments. She uses multiple panels to emphasize
the re-creation of each scene and the idea that the sum of its parts is more
powerful than the whole.
