Turner on Perspective

Turner Contemporary, Margate

Performance

sintesi del comunicato stampa

'Perhaps more significant than enabling painters to depict things accurately, perspective helps artists understand what they are seeing, meaning they engage more deeply with the world.' Maurice Davies. For 30 years JMW Turner was Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy (1807-1837). During these years, he gave a series of lectures about perspective which were famous for being fascinating and eccentric. Be transported to Turner's lecture room with our dramatisation by Turner scholar Maurice Davies. Special guests art critic and broadcaster Alastair Sooke, who will play the critic, and current RA Professor of Perspective Humphrey Ocean as Turner, will reenact the artist's eccentric teaching style, which fuelled critics' scorn and admiration in equal measure. It's a performance that promises to take you right into the drama of Turner's lecture room and the perfect complement to our current exhibition of Turner's perspective drawings, which he used to illustrate the complex theories he tried hard to explain, selected by artist Rosa Barba, which are on show until 6 May. Admission: 10 pounds / 8 pounds concessions.
