'Optikinetic'
Sullivan Goss Ltd. Gallery proudly presents the debut of eleven new kinetic
works by Santa Barbara based sculptor Ken Bortolazzo. This is the first
major one-man exhibition of Bortolazzo's sculptures in Santa Barbara
since 1996 and the first suite of the artist's works to feature kinetic and
dynamic optical effects.
The exhibition is entitled OPTIKINETIC and will present works constructed
out of perforated stainless steel that rock or rotate and when viewed under
varying lighting conditions demonstrate characteristics of a physical
phenomenon known as optic interference patterns. It will feature sculptures
designed for both interior and exterior locations.
Born in 1947, Bortolazzo is recognized for his abstract works inspired by
geometric relationship and forms constructed of burnished and polished
stainless steel. A student of Julio Agostini and Kenneth Noland, Bortolazzo
was also West Coast studio assistant for the late, George Rickey. During
his twelve years in Rickey's studio, Bortolazzo mastered the use of
stainless steel and custom designed rotors and hinges for use in Rickey's
widely regarded kinetic works.
