'The Sun and The Sky'

galerie wieland is pleased to present 'The Sun and The Sky,' a solo show by Dave Allen comprising two new audio works and related works on paper. Allen continues to work on the appropriation and adaptation of examples of popular music and their attendant icons in ways that explore the fundamentals of organised sound.

One work is based on the legendary logo of Sun Records, the instantly recognisable bright yellow label with its decorative musical notes found on classic singles by Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Although the score running around the label rim of Elvis' first single 'That's All Right' (1954) doesn't make much sense musicallyx{2039}it's just a purely graphic motifx{2039}Allen treats the score as a ¼found' compositional fragment. Using a computer, Allen re-writes the 43-note piece and records it as a loop.

The second work revolves around classical compositions influenced by birdsongs.
The gallery space becomes a metaphorical and musical aviary, where actual birdcalls are replaced by overlapping selections from various compositions, including Jean-Philippe Rameau's 'Le Rappel des Oiseaux' and 'Oiseaux Tristes' by Maurice Ravel, which demonstrate different composers' attempts to translate natural animal sounds into formal musical ones.

Dave Allen was born 1963 in Glasgow and currently lives in Berlin.
He studied at Glasgow School of Arts in Scotland and at California Institute of the Arts.
