Jennifer's Family. With this work, the artist wants to raise awareness regarding individuals who deal with poverty and despair, on a daily basis. She is convinced that photographs, when they are empathetic, play an important role as a manifestation of 'social consciousness'.

comunicato stampa

The photographic series Jennifer’s Family was born out of the encounter between the young German New York based photographer Louisa Marie Summer and Jennifer, a 26 year old first generation Puerto Rican immigrant.

The two young women met in South Providence, Rhode Island, an urban community where a significant number of Afro-Americans and Hispanics live. The rate of unemployment and criminality are particularly high and a great part of the population lives under the poverty threshold.

Over more than two years, the artist has documented the daily life of Jennifer who shares a rundown three-room apartment with her Amerindian husband, Tompy, and their four children. Despite being at the lower end of the social ladder, with its difficult living conditions, such as poverty and illness, Jennifer remains optimistic and never fails to take care of her children’s well being.

While working on the project, Louisa became an integral part of the family’s daily life, whom she developed great affection for. The precept of Jennifer’s husband “Respect goes a long way” not only provides the title for the artist’s short movie, but also describes the relationship between Jennifer’s family and herself – a relation based on trust, comprehension and mutual respect.

With this work, Louisa Marie Summer wants to raise awareness regarding individuals who deal with poverty and despair, on a daily basis. The artist is convinced that photographs, when they are honest and empathetic, play an important role as a manifestation of “social consciousness”, capable of affecting the wider public, or at least capable of providing an alternative point of view.

In 2012, in cooperation with Schilt Publishing, Louisa Marie Summer has edited a book presenting the ensemble of her project Jennifer’s Family.
