Rotterdam 2040 is a new video work by artist, his personal view on the development of Rotterdam, from the bombardment of the second world war until now, 100 years after the bombing and the city's 700th anniversary.
On Saturday 18 May, TENT presents Rotterdam 2040, a new video work by artist Gyz La Rivière. "You can't move forward without looking back", is the starting point of his 95-minute film. In an energetic mix of facts, fiction, and futurism, Gyz La Rivière outlines the highs and lows of Rotterdam’s development. The video will be on view at TENT until June 16th.
Rotterdam 2040 is not a factual documentary but a film in which La Rivière presents his personal view on the development of Rotterdam, from the bombardment of the second world war until now, 100 years after the bombing and the city's 700th anniversary. He advocates for an explosive growth of residents in Rotterdam, showing that large parts of Rotterdam were not only destroyed by the German bombardment but through the hands of its guardians, and he puts the city’s old utopian ideas under the microscope. With archive material, new images, and La Rivière himself as the narrator, he knows that after 95 minutes everyone will fall in love with his favorite city. Rotterdam 2040 is the second chapter of La Rivière's lengthy investigation into Rotterdam's history. The research for the film resulted in the book Rotterdam 2040, which was published in 2010.
La Rivière is a multidisciplinary artist who seeks out the boundaries of art by researching its connections to mass media and popular culture in video-, installation- and performance art. Rotterdam often plays a staring roll in his work. In energetic art projects and publications La Rivière depicts the urban problems of his hometown. An overview of Gyz La Rivière's work was recently shown in TENT's exhibition of nominees for the 2012 Dolf Henkes Prize. The jury, headed by Joop van Caldenborgh, chose La Rivière as the winner because of his work’s connection to the city and the infectious enthusiasm with which he makes his multidisciplinary art.
Gyz La Rivière (1976, Rotterdam) graduated in 2000 from the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam. He has exhibited at Municipal Gallery Arsenal, Poznan, Poland (2007), Kunstraum Niederoesterreich, Vienna, Austria (2008), Co-Prosperity Sphere, Chicago, USA (2009), Gallery Sinne, Helsinki, Finland (2011) and Kunsthal (2012) in Rotterdam.
