BROOKLYN - The Martinez Gallery is pleased to present a new group show, 'Ergo Thus,' containing the work of 11 London-based artists assembled by the Jeffrey Charles Gallery and shipped all the way across the pond to Greenpoint. The show is curated by Antonio Zaya and will be on display until November 8.

On first consideration, the eleven works of art in this show, as might be expected, would seem to have little, or even nothing, to do with one another, neither in terms of medium nor theme. But this is precisely the necessary starting condition required of 'Ergo Thus,' which is essentially an exploration of the limits of the individual integrity and autonomy of the individual artwork. The apparently random and forced cohabitation of a single space by so many unrelated works creates a special phenomenon not unlike convergence. Individual sovereignty is in part sacrificed to the experience of the whole, unified 'show.'
Themes, commonalities, allusions, parodies all emerge from the works in 'Ergo Thus.' They interact. And as such, the viewer, like the artist, is creating art. Just as the artist's influences and environment are unwaveringly transmitted to her work, so does the viewer impose her influences her environment on what she sees. The distinctions and links established in Martinez Gallery for this show are reflective of the process of making art --'Ergo Thus' is a show about formal process, about the visual language that is in the gallery space (as well as the artist's studio) at all times.
Arbitrarily selected works. Unselected audience. Incontrollable reactions, interpretations and conclusions. Art choosing artists choosing artworks choosing audiences being chosen by art. 'Ergo Thus.'
After party: [DJ] Charlie Gower is one half of the duo 'Miles and Charles' who have stormed across the party scene in London over the last 5 years playing private and commercial parties alike. His monthly Tantramar Club at Hat on Wall, and noWax at 'dreambagsjaguarshoes are considered two of the best parties on the East London scene. Their popularity stems from their ability to flow from electro to rock to funk to hip hop and country and making it all feel like it belongs together.
