From The Phillips Collection
One of the greatest exhibitions in Denver Art Museum history
opens October 4, 2003. El Greco to Picasso from The Phillips Collection is an
exceptional compilation of European masterworks by 32 of the world's most
renowned and beloved artists.
El Greco to Picasso, ending January 4, 2004,
showcases 53 paintings and sculpture from the mid-1800s through the 1930s, and
the earlier masterpieces that inspired them. The line-up of luminaries includes
greats such as Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, El
Greco, Claude Monet, Pierre Renoir and more.
Visitors' senses will tingle as
they are afforded the unique opportunity of experiencing the grandeur of life in
the exhibition showstopper, Luncheon of the Boating Party by Pierre Renoir.
Although it is one of the world's most famous French Impressionist paintings and
has been seen everywhere from movies to mouse pads, Luncheon of the Boating
Party has only left the Phillips Collection once in the past fifteen years.
October 4, 2003 - January 4, 2004, El Greco to Picasso from The Phillips Collection
The Denver Art Museum closes its 2003 season with this stunning exhibition of 53
paintings and sculptures by European master artists including Monet, Matisse,
Degas, Rodin, and Kandinsky. Most of the art is from the mid-1800s through the
1930s-with a sprinkling of paintings by influential earlier artists such as
Goya, Chardin, and El Greco. Among modern masterpieces like van Gogh's Entrance
to the Public Gardens in Arles (1888), Picasso's Blue Room (1901), Cézanne's
Mont Sainte-Victoire (1886-87), and Daumier's Uprising (1848 or later), the
showstopper is Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party (1880-81), which has been
called his best work.
Duncan Phillips (1886-1966), who acquired it for his
museum, called it "one of the greatest paintings in the world." Phillips spent
more than 50 years assembling his collection of European and American art, said
to be among the best in private hands. The Phillips Collection in Washington,
D.C., is his legacy. Rather than put its best-loved works in storage while it
builds an expansion, the Phillips Collection decided to share them with five
museums around the country as El Greco to Picasso.
