For its eighth edition, it features museum-quality works spanning five centuries of design, accompanied by a cultural programming of site-specific commissions, performances, awards and talks.
For its eighth edition, Design Miami/ Basel returns with an enhanced gallery
selection, showing museum-quality works spanning five centuries of design,
accompanied by a rich cultural programming of site-specific commissions,
performances, awards and talks. All these will be presented in Design Miami/
Basel’s new Herzog & de Meuron designed home.
The June 2013 edition of Design Miami/ Basel will see a significant number of
returning galleries and first-time exhibitors alike, all of which represent the world’s
leading galleries specializing in collectible design. An international roster of nearly
fifty historic and contemporary galleries from thirteen countries will be shown,
alongside the fair’s cutting edge cultural programming, in Hall 1 Süd, part of the
new permanent exhibition hall in Basel’s Messe. The fair will be held June 11-16,
with a private Preview on Monday, June 10.
Design Miami/ Basel welcomes several first-time Design Gallery participants with
various specialties including Galerie Pascal Cuisinier of Paris presenting French
furniture from the 1950s; Thomas Fritsch – ARTRIUM of Paris with mid-century
French ceramics; Southern Guild from South Africa with contemporary design,
Steinitz of Paris specializing in antiques from the seventeenth to nineteenth
century; and YMER &MALTA of Paris, featuring contemporary European designers
“This year’s show will see several interesting juxtapositions - between historic and
contemporary pieces, blue-chip work and emerging collectible design and large-
scale interiors next to small-scale objects, ” says Marianne Goebl, Director of
Design Miami/.
The gallery program for Design Miami/ Basel 2013 will once again feature strong
thematic and conceptual threads including a renewed dialogue between historicand contemporary design. Antiques from the 17th and 18th centuries will be merged
with cutting-edge contemporary work in a spectacular total environment created
by Carpenters Workshop Gallery in collaboration with Steinitz. Several galleries will
recreate historic interiors to contextualize the work of the twentieth century’s most
significant designers including gallery Jacksons’ Alvar Aalto Sanatorium and a
Pierre Paulin interior by Jousse Entreprise.
Other galleries have commissioned designers to explore specific materials, shapes
and effects such as wood, stone, glass, geometric forms and colors to create new
work especially for Design Miami/ Basel 2013, including Galerie BSL from Paris,
Gallery Libby Sellers from London and R 20th Century from New York.
The fair will also offer work across a broad price range. There will be blue-chip,
mid-century pieces of extraordinary provenance that were originally commissioned
by cultural and social leaders of the twentieth century. Galerie Patrick Seguin will
showcase “La Maison des Jours Meilleures” designed by Jean Prouvé at the
initiative of Abbé Pierre in 1956 and Demisch Danant will present a monumental
tapestry by Sheila Hicks commissioned by Eli Rothschild in 1969. At the other end
of the spectrum, Design Miami/ Basel will feature a sophisticated selection of
furniture, lighting, small-scale objects and jewelry from emerging designers for
less than 5,000 euros.
The Design On/Site format showcases solo shows of contemporary design and
reflects a diverse and international selection of designers and dealers
collaborating in unexpected ways to bring new pieces to market. First time
participants for June 2013’s Design On/Site include ProjectB of Milan presenting
Philippe Malouin, Carwan Gallery of Beirut presenting India Mahdavi, NextLevel
Galerie of Paris presenting Bina Baitel and two galleries from London specializing
in artist jewelry with Louisa Guinness Gallery and Elisabetta Cipriani, presenting
Anish Kapoor and Enrico Castellani, respectively.
Design Miami/ Basel will again partner with W Hotels to honor up-and-coming
designers and studios that are expanding the field of design. The W Hotels Designer
of the Future Award moves beyond pure product and furniture design to recognize
technologically and conceptually vanguard pieces that work across multiple
disciplines. Launched in 2006, the fair’s W Hotels Designers of the Future Award
recognizes designers working in innovative ways—whether with new materials,
new processes or unexpected approaches. This year’s award winners will be
announced in April during Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan and their
projects will be unveiled at Design Miami/ Basel this June.Design Miami/ Basel’s cultural program for 2013 will offer a diverse and lively
forum for the exploration of ideas from the fields of design, architecture, fashion,
art and technology. A full program of the fair’s cultural offering of Design Talks,
Performances, Awards and Satellite Shows will be released in the coming months.
