Wondering: Stories on Pilgrims, Six-Finger Madonnas and Flying Houses. Artist talk
Helmut & Johanna Kandl will tell stories and anecdotes about places of Marian pilgrimage: about the professionally medialized French Lourdes, the contemplative-cheerful Slovak Levoca, the traditional Bavarian Altotting, and the jyoful celebration in the Mexican Guadalupe. The artist will talk about images, their iconography and their transformations: What is it that makes the aura of an image? How and when does an object mutate from a workpiece to one of worship? Other issue are the different social structures of pilgrimages, the economic and political significance of pilgrimage sites as well as the history and tales associated with them. The talk takes place in the exhibition with Helmut & Johanna Kandl Maria, breit den Mantel aus... / On Believing in Miracles and Strange Epiphanies, curated by Dorothee Bienert and Antje Weitzel.
