International outdoor exhibition of contemporary art. The fourth edition turns the centre of the town into an art stage where the unconventional, the intriguing, the innovative, beauty or the bizarre grow organically in the eyes of the urban beholders.
Örebro OpenART is an international outdoor exhibition of contemporary art, which takes place in Örebro, Sweden. For almost three months, the notion of cityscape is lifted to a vibrant dimension where art peekaboos at the city’s locals and visitors.
The fourth edition of OpenART, which runs from the 15th of June until the 1st of September, turns the centre of the town into an art stage where the unconventional, the intriguing, the innovative, beauty or the bizarre grow organically in the eyes of the urban beholders.
Around 70 artists from all over the world take over Örebro in a committed attempt to put a spell on the town; artworks of all imaginable and unimaginable forms, materials and structures are displayed in just as imaginable and unimaginable circumstances and places downtown. Every corner downtown Örebro can challenge the passers by into encounters that can affect emotions, arouse curiosity or simply give food for thought. The exhibition bridges between cultures and people, while fostering local and international art dialogue. Örebro OpenART is Sweden’s biggest cultural venue during the summer of 2013.
Since its inception in 2008, OpenART has pinned Örebro on the Swedish contemporary art map; the event has visually stamped the city with iconic creations that took the town’s name across seas and continents. The Big Yellow Rabbit (Florentijn Hofman, 2011), Heart Breaker (Fefe Talavera, 2011), Clothesline (Kaarina Kaikkonen, 2008) or Live Space (Giovanna Aguirre, 2009) were just few of the creations that infused large scale fantasy into the public space.
With this year’s edition, OpenART introduces two new concepts, OpenART Academy and OpenART Kids, in a sustained effort to support artists in all stages of their development.
An extension of the OpenART exhibitions, OpenART Academy is an international art symposium running for four weeks, from the 20th of May to the 16th of June, 2013. The event aims at casting a fresh, dynamic perspective on art by exploring the intricate meanders of the creation process; the artists bring their ideas to the city of Örebro, where their artistic statements evolve into pieces of arts, displayed at the around the Örebro County Museum.
The artists are recruited from all around the world and brought to Örebro to turn their ideas into artwork. While in town, their playground is on the premises of an old bus station.
OpenART Academy includes artist talks, presentations and lectures, which put the magnifying glass on the artists’ creation credos and their translation into works of art.
