Falling from a height. In his project Berk describes his obsession with a twenty-year-old boy. The well-known human emotion of a failing love affair, which sweeps aside all rational thinking and common sense, lies at the heart of this series.
As part of Amsterdam Gay Pride 2013, an exhibition of work by Dutch photographer and film maker Martijn Berk will be on display at Foam. In his project entitled Falling from a height, Berk describes his obsession with a twenty-year-old boy. The well-known human emotion of a failing love affair, which sweeps aside all rational thinking and common sense, lies at the heart of this series. The work raises a number of questions: how far do you go in the quest for intimacy, how do you deal with the emotions that this engenders, and where is the boundary between reality and fiction?
The photos in the exhibition are taken from Berk's recent publication, Falling from a height. Eleven different black and white photographs will be on display in the Foam Café, linked by a strip of contact sheets. This will lend an additional - film-like - dimension to the story, enabling the viewer to experience Berk's quest. There are various close-up shots in which the main character appears to be barely aware of the camera, and portraits in which the subject of Berks' obsession looks you directly in the eye. It is precisely this combination that allows the greatest possible scope for interpretation.
Martijn Berk was born in 1978, and obtained a Master's degree in Business Administration at Radboud University in Nijmegen in 2006. He subsequently changed direction completely, and embarked on a study programme at the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam. His work has since been published in ACHE Magazine. He has made a range of short films, including La Voix, in collaboration with Hotel Des Grandes Hommes in Paris, and Kylian, for DUST Magazine. Berk's work was on display during the 40th anniversary of Introdans, and in 2012 he was selected for New by Gup Magazine.
