4th Annual Summer Residency Program
Oreste 3 is a Summer Residency for Italian and international artists (visual
artists, writers, poets...) and curators that will take place in Montescaglioso
(Italy) between August 26 and September 10, 2000. Montescaglioso is located in
Basilicata (Matera province, Southern Italy) 20 km away from the beach. In the
center of this small town there is a medieval former Abbey and various
historical and archeological sites can be visited in the area. During the 16
days residency three workshops and a festival will take place in Montescaglioso
and each partecipant is free to take part in one or more of them, hopefully
developing further collaborations.
- Fifteen Dinners
Those who take part in this workshop, individually or within a group, can
propose one or several projects related to the food-issue, such as: researching
local (or non-local) recipes, ways and forms of preparing and presenting food,
ingredients required according to the season and to local peculiarities, etc.
Every evening such projects and researches will get to a temporary conclusion
with one of the fifteen dinners that will be held at the Abbey, where it will be
possible to cook, eat, and spend some time all together. Fifteen Dinners is
organized by Filippo Falaguasta, Matteo Fraterno, and Ferdinando Mazzitelli.
Tonino Soranno and a cook from Montescaglioso will help them and provide
suggestions. Tonino Soranno teaches in Matera at the Istituto Alberghiero and
has widely researched on cooking and eating costumes, focusing on the
relationship between food and territory, women, identity, leterature, and art. A
professional local cook will constitute a link between the visiting artists and
the area, the countryside, the supplies, and the farmers, always keeping health
in mind.

please contact Ferdinando Mazzitelli at: fmazzitelli@tiscalinet.it
- Feeling a Sense of Home
This workshop (organized by Giancarlo Norese and Giovanna Trento) intends to
establish a communication with the Montescaglioso community, in an area where
several people left years ago to work abroad and are now coming back 'home'. It
focuses on hospitality, sharing the domestic space, getting to know each other,
and providing a link with the area. Dora Brio, a resident of Montescaglioso,
will contact some people and families interested in the project and the
partecipants will visit them in their private homes, where an exchange will
hopefully take place: photos or videos to look at, a story to be told, a
performance-introduced by the "guests" will be exchanged with other things
proposed by the "hosts" (a meal, a story, a photograph ..). Details will be
decided by the householders (how, when, for how long, how many artists,...).
Domestic routes will be possibly followed by others on the territory, providing
a link between inside and outside: Montescaglioso residents, if they l!

ike, may take us out to the countryside, to the place where they work or to any
other site they consider relevant. In such a way Feeling a Sense of Home may get
connected to Fifteen Dinners.

contribution, please contact Giovanna Trento at:

- Getting Closer
Dario Carmentano intends to establish a communication between visiting and local
artists. He will introduce us to individuls, groups, and associations that work
in the area to share ideas and hopefully start a collaboration. Each artist and
association, previously contacted by Dario who is a resident of the area, will
choose the place where to meet (it may be a studio or a cafeteria, as much as a
square), the issue we’ll be focusing on (the artist’s work or some other topic),
and way and forms regarding how to meet and get to know each other.
If you are interested in Getting Closer and want to give your contribution,
please contact Dario Carmentano at: arteeria@tin.it
- "Sasso d'Oro" Festival
During the Residency the second edition of this festival will take place in
Montescaglioso. Residents and visitors, if they like, will gather together to
take part in an informal competition of dance, music, performance, and singing.
If you are interested in "Sasso d'Oro" Festival and want to give your
contribution, please contact Francesco Impellizzeri at: impiero@libero.it
- Oreste Kids
This workshop, organized by Alessandra Pioselli, will take place in
Montescaglioso before the Residency (June/July) and will be addressed
specifically to the children of the area, where some artists will go to work
with the them.
Before and during Venice Biennale 1999, Oreste has widely promoted the creation
af an international network between independent art organizations and
artists-run initiatives, with the aim of exchanging information and resources.
Some of the national and international groups and organizations that collaborate
with Oreste will attend Oreste 3 in Montescaglioso.
Rapresentatives of groups who are interested in such a networking may contact
Caroline Bachmann at: jonas@libero.it
