Fantastic architectures in Western art
The Centre de Cultura Contemporà nia de Barcelona closes its cycle of exhibitions about the architectural imaginary with The City That Never Was. Fantastic Architectures in Western Art.
Following the exhibitions of 1997 and 2000, 'Soul Houses', which presented models from antiquity and reflected on the ancients' notions of dwelling, and 'Founding the City', which focused on the myths of city foundation in the ancient world, this exhibition presents images of imaginary architecture or spaces become impracticable or ambiguous places of dreams.
The exhibition brings together in the region of 80 works of art on a variety of supports, including frescoes, painting, photographs and installations. The exhibition turns around the genre of the architectural capriccio, from the 16th to the 18th century, with a representation of the foremost painters of the leading European schools (Monsu Desiderio, Vredeman de Vries, Van Delen, Codazzi, Francisco Gutiérrez, Marieschi, Bellotto, Hubert Robert). This section is complemented by a selection of Pompeian frescoes from the Museum of Archaeology of Naples and a sample of artists of the historical avant-garde movements to have been influenced by this pictorial tradition (De Chirico, Piet Mondrian, Mario Sironi, Klee, Paul Delvaux, Leon Spilliaert), and finally presents the repercussions of these themes on some of today's visual artists (José Manuel Ballester, Ann Veronica Janssens, Catherine Yass, Miquel Navarro, Olivo Barbieri and Cristina Iglesias, among others).
