International composition competition 2000. The competition awards prizes for compositions which in a musically artistic fashion are allied to a European garden of high repute. The competition has the aim of blending the art of garden design and the music to make a whole work and so to create a lasting cultural heritage.
The concept of the competition came about through an
international exhibition which took place in Lisbon in 1993. At that
time the promoter was the European Commission, General
Directory X (Information, Communication, Culture, Audio-Visual
Media, Cultural Action) in Brussels. This exhibition presented
important European gardens and memorial parks. The fact that not
only were the internationally outstanding historical baroque parks
in the town of Kleve included in this exhibition but were also
chosen to be the motif for the exhibition poster and to appear on
the cover page of the exhibition catalogue drew attention to a
further focal point in this particular cultural sphere. The idea was
born to take up in Kleve the opportunity indicated by Brussels and
Lisbon and to develop it further.
The idea of the competition is to characterise
musically selected European parks or gardens;
so to say "to set into the scene", an idea which is
not without example in the history of music.
The initial event, in a regular series of biennial competitions, will in
the year 2000 have as its subject the historical parks in the town of
Kleve. Which garden or park is to be the subject for the following
competition will be made known in good time. Although the park
or garden will be different for each competition the organisational
responsibility for the competition will remain in Kleve.
Performances
The prize winners' concert will take place on 13th August 2000 in
the open air in the grounds of the historical parks of the town of
Kleve.
The composers are under the obligation to provide, or to have
provided through their publishers, the number of correct and
performable orchestral and, where applicable, choral scores
together with any other directions needed for the performance of
their works.
All première performance rights to the prize winning compositions
and a copy of the orchestral and choral scores etc. are to be
assigned to the competition organisers.
Where possible, but not obligatorily, the works will be performed
at the closing concerts. In the case of a work that proves too
costly to perform the concert organisers reserve the right to
postpone the performance of the work.
In case of doubt in the interpretation and application of the rules
and conditions governing the competition the original German text
shall prevail.
