Older works. For his second exhibition, Byrne presents a single channel film made with actors at the New York Theatre Workshop in May 2007. He reconstructed six interviews with peripheral celebrities from early issues of Andy Warhol's Interview magazine. Jutta Koether's exhibition Viktoria is centered on PVC sculpture scattered with objects, metal hinges, and souvenirs.
PRAXES Center for Contemporary Art, a new not-for-profit venue for
international contemporary art and research in Berlin, presents half-year
cycles of consecutive exhibition modules, papers, and live activities
revolving around two unassociated artistic practices. For the inaugural
exhibition cycle, PRAXES presents two parallel strings of exhibitions by
Gerard Byrne (Dublin/Copenhagen) and Jutta Koether (Berlin/New York).
Gerard Byrne uses photographic, video, and live art to explore the
ambiguities inherent in revisiting the legacies of cultural forms such as
theater, photography, and magazines. For his second exhibition module at
PRAXES, Byrne presents the single channel film *ZAN -T185 r.1: (Interview)
v.1, no. 4 - v.2, no. 6, 19 (1969 -Feb. 1972); (Andy Warhol's (Interview)
v.2, no. 21 - v.3, no. 9 – the title of which refers to microfilm numbers
in the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Made with actors
at the New York Theatre Workshop in May 2007, Byrne reconstructed six
interviews with peripheral celebrities from early issues of Andy Warhol’s
Interview magazine. Forever caught in the expectations of media and genre,
yet strangely charming and timeless in its failure to fully deliver as
either documentary or fiction, *ZAN -T185 was shot by cinematographer
Christopher Doyle.
Eight weeks ago (19 September 2013) is also on display, a black-and-white
photograph belonging to “Newsstand,” an ongoing series depicting magazine
racks and newsstands. Presenting viewers with analog photography of
hundreds of magazine cover images that essentially constitute “the
contemporary,” these works are continuously re-titled to mark the temporal
span between the day the photograph was taken and the day of exhibition.
Jutta Koether’s exhibition Viktoria remains on display through September.
While centered on the eponymous PVC sculpture scattered with objects,
metal hinges, and souvenirs encircling a canvas spine, this work is
occasionally joined and connoted by the paintings Alostrael (2009) and
Black Garland Berlin (#1: WTF) (2011).
Publications
The PRAXES Papers are a steady accumulation of edited, free, downloadable
material sourced from and around the artistic practice. As a growing
journal of articles, commissioned commentary, documentation, ephemera, and
more, PRAXES Papers aim to be an alternative resource for thinking of and
around artistic processes and presentations today.
Anticipating the display opening on 19 September, Gerard Byrne’s Paper no.
1 is available at http://www.praxes.de/Byrne.htm. This Paper creates the
opportunity to download a “new edition” of Byrne's “Newsstand” photograph
every day (bled fully, privileging an on-screen viewing over home-printing
or even the physical display), while broadcasting the time spent with
Byrne's work at PRAXES.

About PRAXES
PRAXES invites audiences to collectively and critically explore the range
and diversity of artistic practice today by gradually presenting artworks,
production processes as well as related material in cumulative display,
text, and event formats.
Every six months, PRAXES focuses on two artistic practices in parallel,
presenting and correlating three or more exhibitions (a cycle)
investigating both broader strokes and odd corners of the practice of each
artist. Displays of older works, collaborations, performances, unfinished
business, failed ideas, archives, and other material allow for a slow
surfacing of recurring themes, materials, and methods as well as
contradictions and productive disruptions across a body of work. As
simultaneous outlets for the same investigation, PRAXES presents a
multitude of short-term live explorations (Parlors) and publications
(Papers).
