The aim of this event is to show and enable people to experience the many-faceted creative work in the fields of product, furniture and industrial design as well as experimental design. In cooperation with many partners, the whole of Vienna becomes a platform and showplace of design.
VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is Austria ́s largest design festival, with a variaty of locations and events in Vienna. Last year it delighted over 37.200 visitors. The festival, curated by Tulga
Beyerle and Lilli Hollein, will enter its 7th round this year.
National and international works of product-, furniture-, graphic-, and industrial design,
such as experimental approaches will be presented from September 27 to Ocotber 6,
2013. Revealing the creative process of the production and to initiate projects are core
elements of the festival ́s concept.
INTERNATIONAL DESIGN IN WIEN
During VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, the city becomes a platform and showcase of design. In
cooperation with designers from all over the world, Viennese museums and companies,
the festival shows different approaches to design. International but local, sets out to be
this year ́s motto.
CELEBRATING DESIGN, (RE) THINKING DESIGN
Design is more than just a designed object. VIENNA DESIGN WEEK defines design as an
essential part of the cultural production. The festival shows that design shapes our
material culture, our every-day life and our world as consumers. Simultaneously, it
influences our lifestyles and most fundamentally our aesthetic senses and judgements.
Therefore, VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has based its mission on both, the celebration of
design and on its critical examination.
In the past years VIENNA DESIGN WEEK became much more than just a festival:
It is a design network that assembles the most important heads of culture, economy,
media, politics and the creative scene.
The exhibition „Werkstadt Vienna”, that shows a selection of Passionswege projects of
the past festival seasons, was presented at World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 in
September last year. It traveled from Helsinki and MAK Vienna further to the design
capital Milano where it exhibited at Ventura Lambrate. This June, the exhibtion will be
presented at the newly opened “New Institute” in Rotterdam.
PREVIEW: HIGHLIGHTS
With over a hundred events, exhibitions, on site installations, and plenty of
opportunities to celebrate and to network: VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is not only a melting
pot for the international design scene, but also overwhelms a big crowd of Viennese and
Vienna visitors every year. 2012 the festival counted 37.000 visitors during ten days.
This year ́s focus district is Wieden. Between Karlsplatz and the future Central Train
Station the 4th district will be the eyecatcher of the festival with its variety of
Passionswege projects, events, venues, and locations.
Argentinierstraße 11 (in the 4th
district) turns into this year’s festival central point. In the former school building, you
find the festival’s infopoint, a Pop-Up-Café and the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Laboratory,
where you can see international graphic and product designers in action.
As in the previous festival season, another focal point will be Social Design and
Future Urban Mobilty. Experts of design industries, technology and politics will give
insight into concepts like “Smart City” and “E-Mobility” at VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2013.
A Summer School in Aspern, Vienna’s future Urban Lakeside, will anticipate the
subject during the summer.
In this year’s programme the University of Applied Arts Vienna will participate with a
grand, international and prominently casted conference totled “Social Design – Public
Action”, from September 26 – 27, 2013.
