Common Fields brings together a mix of artists from two artist led projects
from opposite sides of London. At Studio Voltaire, a converted Methodist
church and warehouses in Clapham Common and the Florence Trust Studios, in a
grade one late Victorian Gothic church near Highbury Fields, 40 artists
exhibit an exciting mix of diverse work.
Andy Parker's recreated police cordon tape drawings intervene with the
Florence Trust's highly ornate interior. Gill Rocca's sublime black and
white cloud paintings suggest contemplation. Poppy George and Tamasin
Rhymes have constructed a tree house echoing the architectural form of the
church. Loren Beven's 'Cosmic Microwave' humorously explores creation myths.
Freire Barnes' site-specific sound installation teasingly catches you
unaware or, if you are unfortunate, not at all and Jonathan Clark's 'A New
Kind of Sheriff in a New Kind of Town' is concerned with justice, naivety
and cowboys, both metaphorical and literal. Other artists are Laura
Aldridge, Ray Andrews, Andy Briggs, Iain Drummond, Bella Easton, Charles
Engebretsen, Kathryn Lang, Paul Eugene Riley, Jacqueline Merry Bernard,
Karine Pradier, Joe Scotland, Daniel Wallis and Thurle Wright.
Studio Voltaire actively supports contemporary arts practice at the grass
roots through its studio programme and its education and exhibition
programmes create a supportive and critical atmosphere in which to develop
diverse artistic practices. The Florence Trust is committed to the
production and promotion of new work though the provision of short-term
studio residencies. The Trust continues to provide inspiring studio space to
an ever-changing community of artists pushing boundaries and engaging in
critical exchange.
Common Fields aims to add to the rich network of cultural exchange in
London.
