comunicato stampa

This Autumn, we will celebrate the launch of our new One Work book by exhibiting Rodney Graham’s Phonokinetoscope (2001) at the Lethaby Gallery at Central Saint Martins College of Arts & Design, London.

Rodney Graham’s Phonokinetoscope is the subject of our new One Work by Shepherd Steiner, and a 16mm film installation in which the artist is seen riding a bicycle through Berlin’s Tiergarten while taking LSD, to the soundtrack of a song (written and performed by Graham). Inspired by Thomas Edison’s invention of the kinetophonograph, the turntable drives the projection of the film, the film starting when the needle is placed on the record.

This is the first time that Afterall will present an exhibition of this kind and it is a unique opportunity for Afterall to exhibit what we publish. An in conversation between Rodney Graham and Shepherd Steiner will take place on Saturday 19 October at the Platform Theatre, Central Saint Martins, London.

The One Work series started in 2006. Each book presents a single work of art considered in detail by a single author.

Afterall has invited Luminous Books to set up in the Lethaby Gallery entrance for the duration of the exhibition. Afterall One Work books will be available to purchase, alongside psychedelic titles – secondhand, rare and new, and a selection chosen by Rodney Graham.

Rodney Graham will be exhibiting in the group exhibition Orpheus Twice at David Roberts Art Foundation from 20 September – 14 December 2013. During the exhibition he will also participate in an evening of performances on 17 October 2013 with his performance Softcore - More Solo Guitar Music for the Sex Scene, Zabriskie Point, 2001.

Phonokinetoscope by Rodney Graham is on loan from Collection M.J.S., Paris Long Term Loan Collection Mudam Luxembourg - Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean.

The exhibition is generously supported by Central Saint Martins, Hauser & Wirth, Johnen Galerie and Lisson Gallery. The in conversation event is supported by The Sandra Blow Estate and Central Saint Martins and is presented as part of the research project The City and Its Moving Images, a collaboration between Afterall and the Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image.
