New York, NY - Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art (PSCA) announces the opening of a
new exhibit entitled Betrayal/Portrayal, featuring new artworks by Robert
Appleton, Alfredo Cannata, Robert Irwin, and Aaron Krach.
Betrayal/Portrayal exhibits four gay artists, who express themselves through
painting, works on paper, sculpture, and conceptual installations. The premise
of the show is, "does one's sexuality affect one's art?". And if so, is there
such a thing as "gay art".
Robert Appleton offers portraits of go-go boys and images of desire in a raw,
expressionistic style with an emphasis on line and color. He uses mixed media
on paper, including oil stick. This work is inspired by candid photos found in
HX MAGAZINE and NEXT MAGAZINE.
Alfredo Cannata paints idealized versions of men and women in oil on linen. He
is a part of the avant garde of younger Italian artists in Milan, Italy.
Robert Irwin works in sculpture and photography. This is the first time these
two media will be shown together in a gallery exhibition. His sculptures, in
alabaster and in marble, are voluptuous abstractions that complement his
photographs of male nudes.
Aaron Krach, to be shown at PSCA for the first time, is a conceptual artist who
explores the emotion of love and asks if it can be portrayed without irony. His
photos of plastic flowers feature brilliant and lush colors, while his portraits
are evocative of romantic longing.
Opening November 5th,
6 - 9 PM, thru December 6th.

PSCA is founded on the premise that the artist comes first and is the raison
d'être of the art world. The role of the gallerist is to nurture creative
accomplishment and to cultivate the collectors and curators who can sustain the
artists. The artists represented are those whose work one would wish to collect
and to enjoy, while helping to support their careers. PSCA is led by Paul
Sharpe, formerly of the Whitney Museum of American Art.
The space itself is meant to encourage a dialogue in issues in art today and as
such is designed as a salon rather than a white box. The color scheme is blue,
camel, and white and it is inspired by a Justin Knowles painting of the mid
1960s. The concept is to create a space where artist and art lovers can
congregate and appreciate fine contemporary art.
