The stormy ice mountain sabotage mission of the secret electronic transmission technician. His large-scale works on paper are like surrealistic-abstract maps of current events, places or people.
Esther Schipper is pleased to present the fourth solo exhibition in the gallery of Nathan Carter.
Carter’s large-scale works on paper are like surrealistic-abstract maps of current events, places or people. The new works shown at the gallery, many presented as dip- and triptychs, can be divided into day- and nighttime scenarios of events taking place in snowy surrounds. Using pencil, ink and paint, the artist creates scenes that take the viewer’s gaze on a visual rollercoaster ride.
Titles play an important role in the work of Carter, since the lengthy caption of each work hints at its content. A CLOSE UP VIEW OF THE ANTENNA STRUCTURE, COMMUNICATION CABLE AND THE GIANT DATA COLLECTION CONDUIT FUNNELS AND FUNICULAR TRAM CABLE-CAR STATIONS (2013) shows a mountain incline with cable-cars that in turn are connected to funnels reminiscent of underground data cables. The title of the exhibition, THE STORMY ICE MOUNTAIN SABOTAGE MISSION OF THE SECRET ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION TECHNICIAN, points to an event involving a technician, which the viewer guesses loosely connects all the scenarios on display. Most works contain large areas of blue tones reminiscent of snowy weather conditions on ski slopes with a tangle of power or data lines. Arranged almost playfully the scenes can be seen to criticize the feebleness of manmade structures, such as data collection centres or power plants when faced by a natural disaster.
