City and House

On the occasion of Otto Steidle's 60th birthday the Architecture Museum of the TU Munich will exhibit selected works of the architect in it's 3rd room in the Pinakothek der Moderne.

Otto Steidle ranks not only as one of Germany's most successful architects, but also one of its most versatile. Particularly in the area of residential architecture he has, for decades, again and again demonstrated his ability to move in new directions. Steidle sticks neither to patent formulas nor to universal systems; he knows no 'either-or'. Rather he weighs possibilities, changing and adapting his architecture as is appropriate for each project. For Steidle, it is not the building's form but the urban structure - of which it is a part - that is decisive for living quality. His architecture therefore changes with each location and context, being as diverse and unpredictable as life itself.

By means of sketches, drawings, photographs, models and film the following structures and projects, among others, will be presented:
* General planning of the Theresienhöhe, Munich, since 1997
* Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Bremerhaven, 1999
* Central University Library, Ulm, 2001
* Michaelisquartier, Hamburg, 2001
* Residential area, Freischützstraße, Munich, 2001
* Beijing Image, Peking, 2002.

The catalogue "Otto Steidle - Die Stadt und das Haus (City and House)" will be published for the exhibition.

As part of the series 'All About Me - Artist Discussions in the Pinakothek der Moderne', Otto Steidle will talk about his work on Nov. 11, 2003 at 6:30 pm in the Ernst von Siemens Auditorium in the Pinakothek der Moderne.
