The artists Edwina Ashton and Christiana Protto have been invited by glass to
present new works for Coleman project space.
'Introduction' offers an opportunity to initiate a dialogue between two artists,
whose practices differ but whose works have resonance and parallel concerns in
often unsuspecting ways.
Edwina Ashton's works are populated with characters that undertake absorbing yet
strangely inconsequential activities. In these bizarre encounters, social
interaction and etiquette are thrown off kilter as the inappropriate and awkward
become apparent. Seriousness and humour are juxtaposed giving these works a
troubling quality, with the characters acquiring an air of self-consciousness as
they sit uncomfortably between the animal and the human. Edwina will be making
new video works for this exhibition.
A traveller rather than a tourist, Christiana Protto's practice is thoroughly
informed by the experience of the journey. In her drawings, installations and
video works, found objects referring to mundane aspects of life are recollected
and relocated in constellations where social and historical routines and
conventions are questioned. In the tension between the falsely safe comfort of a
domestic environment and the thrill of an uncomfortable journey, a space is
dedicated to the useful (dis)orders of small bizarre pleasures and moments of
wit and eccentricity. At Coleman Christiana will produce a new installation.
