The Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, existing for nearly a quarter of a century, has been accumulating an art collection from almost its very beginning, for that reason the CCA Collection was formed.

It developed gradually and its works were presented in rather regular installments as to give the public an opportunity to orient themselves in the direction and development of Polish as well as international trends in contemporary art.

The CCA ZU Collection, by referring to historical avant-garde, has also become, especially in its initial phase, an important component in the creation of value and ascribing points of reference for the whole field of art in a changed socio-political reality after the turn of 1989.

The Collection’s rich contents, its multidisciplinarity, and rich diversity result in sporadic attempts at new authorial interpretations or the presentation of its successive fragments in new variants and constellations.

The current show consists of a limited choice of works from a few artists whose objects and implementations have enriched the collection over the past three years. Most of them were part of group exhibitions, others, such as Mirosław Bałka’s video work “Winterreise (Bambi, Bambi, Pond),” evoking strong historical and moral reflections, or the monumental and mysterious sculpture-installation from Monika Zawadzki entitled "Poverty," were both fragments of their individual shows at the CCA. Also on view in the show: Agnieszka Polska’s 5-channel installation entitled "Five short videos," which is a national premiere taking place in the CCA, as the work has only been exhibited abroad.

Furthermore, the exhibition includes the photographs of several artists who have decided to convey their message through the utilization of photography. Maciej Pisuk, Wojciech Prażmowski, Konrad Pustoła, Wojciech Wieteska, Wojciech Wilczyk, Michał Szlaga give us their very personal and refined comments to a difficult and complex reality, which in the field of photography currently resonates most notably in contemporary art.

As one can imagine, selecting just a few works from such a rich collection and from such august artists was not easy, but it may indicate the direction in which the development of the CCA ZU Collection is heading in and what value it is trying to bring forth to the entire spectrum of contemporary art in our country.

Most of the works exhibited in the collection have been purchased for the CCA Ujazdowski Castle Collection in Warsaw with substantial financial assistance from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
