comunicato stampa

Corbett vs. Dempsey is pleased to announce three simultaneous solo exhibitions: Arturo Herrera, Books; John Sparagana, Crowds & Powder; and Jackie Saccoccio, Portraits.

Jackie Saccoccio
Portraits

Jackie Saccoccio’s brilliant work was brought to the attention of Corbett vs. Dempsey by Christopher Wool. In Portraits, her first show in Chicago, the New York based artist presents three medium-sized paintings, each one featuring a head-like oval form, all of them technically dazzling with skeins of parallel dribbles that acutely change direction, forming a veritable undercarriage for hazy and more definite shapes. Saccoccio is a wizard-like colorist, culling hues that shouldn’t work together into something at once confident and unsettling.

Arturo Herrera
Books

In his second Corbett vs. Dempsey exhibition, Arturo Herrera unveils his newly minted artist books. Grouped and boxed in sets of 10, these unique works are interventions into hand-selected flea-market finds, both cloth-bound and paperback specimens, that the artist has reworked with serigraphy, printing onto each page spread, overlaying optical patterns, expressionistic lines, or swooping cartoon shards. Closely related to Herrera’s collages, these books refrain from cutting and mixing, instead leaving all the elements in situ, executing all operations on material compiled in a given format. The result, in every case, is a transformed object, a fragment of literature page-by-page rejuvenated, resuscitated, reborn.

John Sparagana
Crowds & Powder

Crowds & Powder represents John Sparagana’s second exhibition with Corbett vs. Dempsey, building on the momentum of 2011's Between the Eyes, as well as recent shows in Berlin and Zürich. Deploying an intense and deliberative process of breaking down and rebuilding magazine pages, Sparagana’s incredible works require another term than “collage,” as they continue to interrogate the delivery systems of mass media. With a manual sensibility and the obsessiveness of a digital stutter, this body of works deconstructs the cold, fast read of news magazine spreads, slowing down the viewer’s scan of the image, infusing it with a painterly patina and a post apocalyptic buzz.
