comunicato stampa

Jürgen Partenheimer (born in 1947 in Munich) is internationally renowned for his multifaceted work following his participation in the Paris, Venice and São Paulo biennials. In his artistic formulations constructive elements of Minimal Art are combined with lyrical intensity. With critical awareness Partenheimer measures and maps the freedom of art that is continuously being redefined, as well as its practice. As a representative of a subjective abstraction he is considered one of the most important contemporary German artists.

This year Jürgen Partenheimer received one of the most renowned Canadian awards for visual art from Emily Carr University of Art+Design in Vancouver. Endowed with $ 30.000, the ‘Audain Distinguished Residency Award’ includes a 3-month residency in Vancouver for 2014. ‘The Archive’ as the artist’s physical and mental ‘storage’ unites retrospection with the present, the individual with the cultural memory in an impressively orchestrated manner. Works from various periods and media will be brought together – paintings, works on paper, sculptures and selected artists’ books and texts will explore the evocativeness of their form and content. The installation as an image of singularity and difference opens up subjective and reflexive spaces for the viewer to experience.

Jürgen Partenheimer outlined the project as follows: ‘The artist’s archive denotes neither a site nor a space; it is rather a synonym for everything that exists and has been gathered within and without an open terrain of imagination and reality.’ Jürgen Partenheimer’s artistic approach revolves around the critical existence of the oeuvre, the experience connected with the activity and the enduring relation between repetition and transience. His work leaves the viewer with the experience solely based on the inherent order of the imagery. In this way the artist’s works can be seen as ‘impossible images’, transgressing what can be seen and expressed in words, reacting contrary to conventional expectations.
