Sabine Hornig

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam

In the second of the Sensory Spaces series, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents a site-specific installation by Sabine Hornig entitled ‘Double Transparency’. Sensory Spaces is a three-year series of exhibitions in which contemporary artists create site-specific works in the museum’s entrance area. This is Hornig’s first exhibition in the Netherlands.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has commissioned Sabine Hornig to make an installation filling the almost 200m2 Willem van der Vorm Gallery. The installation is an open wooden construction lined with stretched, transparent printed fabric. It is surrounded by handmade architectonic objects. Horning uses these means to explore the experience of the space.

Layered vision
Hornig is known for her photographs, sculptures and installations that question our perception of space and time. At first glimpse her work looks simple. The longer we look, we realise that our perception is being tested. Hornig has made her name with sculptures consisting of photographic prints placed between reflective sheets of glass. In her first large-scale installation using semi-transparent fabric walls that the visitor can look through, she has printed photographs of empty shop windows. The glazed shop fronts reflect the surrounding streetscape. In this way various moments, locations and perspectives are interlaced, inviting the visitor to contemplate space and the passage of time.

When asked how she selected the images to print on the fabric and the ordering of the images, Hornig replied: “I usually start with a spatial situation and then search for an image, or I start with an image that I then transform into a space or a particular form. For the installation ‘Double Transparency’ I transformed the museum’s solid walls – on which works of art are normally hung – into transparent membranes that are themselves conveyors of information: a freely traversable and transparent building site.”

Sabine Hornig was born in Germany and lives and works in Berlin. In recent years her work has been exhibited at leading art institutions around the world, including the following exhibitions: ‘Durchs Fenster’, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (solo, 2011-2012), ‘Just Then’, Christina Guerra Contemporary Art, Lisbon (solo, 2010), ‘Projects 78: Sabine Hornig’, Museum of Modern Art, New York (solo, 2003), ‘30 Kunstler / 30 Räume’, K20, Düsseldorf (group, 2012), ‘Berlin /Tokyo’, Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (group, 2006).

Sensory Spaces series
Sensory Spaces is a series of commissioned solo projects presented in the Willem van der Vorm Gallery, located in the freely accessible exhibition space in the museum’s entrance hall. Artists are invited to respond to the architectural qualities of the space, emphasizing notions of transformation and surprise. This open location has been selected in order to bring every museum visitor in contact with the latest developments in the visual arts. The international group of artists selected to show in ‘Sensory Spaces’ have rarely or never exhibited in the Netherlands. Each exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual booklet with an essay by the curator. The series opened with Oscar Tuazon (1975, Seattle, lives and works in Los Angeles). The Israeli artist Elad Nassry (1977, Tel Aviv, lives and works in Los Angeles) will be the third artist to transform the space in February 2014.
