Renilde Hammacher

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam

A selection of her purchases by post-war artists

sintesi del comunicato stampa

Renilde Hammacher was the museum curator from 1962 to 1978. In this period she shaped one of the most important museum collections of modern art in the Netherlands. To celebrate her hundredth birthday in March 2013, the museum is exhibiting a selection of the works she acquired by post-war artists. Mark Rothko's large canvas 'Grey, Orange on Maroon, no. 8' has not been on display for some time and many visitors have asked about it. This month it makes its welcome return to the museum as part of an exhibition of works collected by Renilde Hammacher. In addition to 'the Rothko', Hammacher also acquired works by Salvador Dali', Rene' Magritte and Man Ray, among others. She also curated major exhibitions, such as the legendary Dali' retrospective in 1970, opened by the Surrealist master himself. Looking back on his tenure as director of the museum in 1978, Coert Ebbinge called Renilde Hammacher "a great, stimulating and driving force".
