Art Prize for Schools exhibition
11 February 2014, London: The Saatchi Gallery is delighted to announce this year’s Saatchi Gallery/ Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools exhibition which will take place from 27 February – 5 March and will showcase artwork by 20 shortlisted students.
The Saatchi Gallery/ Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools is one of the largest international competitions open to primary, secondary and sixth form schools from around the world, who are invited to submit artwork by students up to the age of 18. This year the prize received over 16,000 entries from 33 countries.
The Saatchi Gallery has a nearly 30-year-long history of supporting emerging artists and bringing contemporary art to as wide an audience as possible. The Saatchi Gallery/ Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools aims to support and encourage budding young artists by providing them with a platform to showcase their work, and giving them the confidence to consider a career in the arts.
Deutsche Bank's support of the Prize is part of the bank's commitment to help young people access creative opportunities and fulfil their potential. The support of Deutsche Bank’s youth engagement programme, Born to Be, has enabled the Saatchi Gallery to offer tailored artist-led workshops to pupils from schools in disadvantaged areas, increasing their understanding of fine art processes, having the opportunity to work with specialist art materials and giving them support in entering the prize process.

The judges for this year’s prize are the author and illustrator Laura Dockrill, art advisor to Deutsche Bank and critic Alistair Hicks, artist Bob and Roberta Smith and Saatchi Online director Rebecca Wilson. Notable previous judges include Peter Blake, Antony Gormley, Marc Quinn and Yinka Shonibare.
A first prize of £10,000 will be awarded to the winning school's art department, with a further £2,000 given to the winning pupil to be spent on art and computer equipment. Two further runner-up prizes of £5,000 each will be awarded to the second and third placed schools, with a further £1,000 to each of the winning pupils. The prize money provides art departments with the ability to install state of the art computer and printing equipment and provide high quality art materials which allow pupils to explore, develop and realise their creative potential.
Euros Rowlands Head of Art & Design at Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera (2012 winning art department) commented, “Ever since we started submitting work for Art Prize for Schools 3 years ago, it has been a powerful tool in instilling confidence in our students’ perception of their own talent and judgement. Art education is as much about nurturing self-belief in the student’s own approach and identity within the visual arts as it is about the teaching of specific skills.”
Bob and Roberta Smith, Artist and judge commented, “It was such fun, and at times moving, looking through submissions to the Saatchi Gallery/ Deutsche Bank Art prize for Schools. Many of the images really sung out to me! Young people’s art is so appealing because it’s all about the 'cry' of the artist. As artists develop art can become about the language of art, but in many of the works in this show it's as if you can hear some of the strong voices of the art of the future.”

The Saatchi Gallery was founded in 1985 by Charles Saatchi to provide a platform to bring contemporary art to as wide an audience as possible and make it accessible. Over the last three years the Saatchi Gallery has hosted 10 out of the top fifteen most visited exhibitions in London, according to The Art Newspaper’s survey of international museum attendance, and is also ranked amongst the world’s top three most liked museums on Facebook and Twitter by Museum Analytics. Entry to all exhibitions at the Saatchi Gallery is free.
The Prize is part of the Saatchi Gallery's education programme which is committed to introducing contemporary art to younger audiences. More than 10,000 school groups have visited the Saatchi Gallery since it opened in Chelsea in October 2008.

It is one of many projects that we support that targets 11-18 year olds with education-led projects that aim to increase achievement, develop employability skills and raise aspirations.
This Prize is an excellent example of how the arts can support education and vital life skills, providing young people with the creativity and confidence they need to become who they were born to be.
