New oil and acrylic paintings on canvas and on paper by Malaysian-born artist Tattfoo Tan. The works become visual and spiritual metaphors; the strength of the Bonsai tree, the sound bamboo makes in the wind, the way flowers grow out of still waters
Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art (PSCA) announces the opening of a
new exhibit entitled Paintings From Within, featuring new oil and acrylic
paintings on canvas and on paper by Malaysian-born artist Tattfoo Tan.
Paintings From Within exhibits paintings by Tattfoo Tan, a Malaysian-born artist now living in Staten Island. The works evoke his heritage with titles such as "Bambooscape" and "Porcelain Blue", contrasted with his new life experiences in New York City, found in works entitled "Moss Salad", "Chocolate Dreams", and "Goat Cheese and Lux".
The works, all from 2003, are from a series entitled "Tanah Air". Which loosely
translated refers to the process of discarding old habits and finding new ones
to take their place. The works become visual and spiritual metaphors; the
strength of the Bonsai tree, the sound bamboo makes in the wind, the way flowers grow out of still waters. Tan, who has been living in New York City for three
years, finds a new voice in this artistically free environment that amplifies
his traditional values and centuries-old traditions. The work is remarkably
fresh, bright, and animated while assuming the decorum of accepted expressions
over time. The series references food and daily activities from a multicultural
perspective.
This is Tan's first solo show at PSCA. One of his works was included in the
recent exhibit, The Invisible Thread, at the Newhouse Contemporary Art Center,
where it garnered mention by Holland Cotter in The New York Times. Tan was born
in 1975 on the Island of Penang, Malaysia. He grew up in a culturally diverse
society, where he learned to paint at the age of six with Yong Mun Seng, a
pioneer watercolorist in the South East Asia region.
Tan is represented in many collections, including Lauren Graham of the Gilmore
Girls, Ms. Deborah Sontag, Ms. Vivienne Tam, and the National Museum of
Malaysia.

PSCA is founded on the premise that the artist comes first and is the raison
d'être of the art world. The role of the gallerist is to nurture creative
accomplishment and to cultivate the collectors and curators who can sustain
artists. The artists represented are those whose work one would wish to collect
and to enjoy, while helping to support their careers. PSCA is led by Paul
Sharpe, formerly of the Whitney Museum of American Art.
The space itself is meant to encourage a dialogue in issues in art today and as
such is designed as a salon rather than a white box. The color scheme is blue,
camel, and white and it is inspired by a Justin Knowles painting of the mid
1960s. The concept is to create a space where artist and art lovers can
congregate and appreciate fine contemporary art.
Opening January 7th, 6 - 9 PM, thru January 31st.
